WHAT IS A DIAGRAM?

Diagram- A simplified drawing showing the appearance, structure, or workings of something; a schematic representation.Ex: Heart Diagram

What diagrams do- A plan, sketch, drawing or outline designed to demonstrate or explain how something works or to show the relationship between the parts of a whole object or image. Ex: The Human Eye

THE RURAL GRID

Samuel Holland's Survey of St. John's Island

Rural Grid – A survey and or map showing proposed lots and parishes represented in the rural areas of a country or area.

Capt. Samuel Johannes Holland – St.John’s Island

  • Samuel Holland was a surveyor/cartographer that surveyed and was General Surveyor of British North America.
  • Holland completed the mapping along the St.Lawrence River, Prince Edward Island (St.John’s), the Madelaine Islands and also Cape Breton.
  • He mapped the Island and designed the lots and parishes of the Island between the years of 1764 and 1766, this included the mapping of Queens, Kings and Prince county.
  • He had great skill in mapping considering what equipment he had access to in his time. His design and layout of P.E.I is still relevant and used today as a large part of mapping the Island to this day

THE STREET GRID

Street Grid- The grid plan or grid street plan, is a type of city plan in which streets run at right angles to each other, forming a grid.

  • Samuel Holland was the surveyor general and was given the job of surveying British holdings in the world including Charlottetown.
  •  Holland suggested that  Charlottetown be one of the primary island towns and be named Charlotte Town after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III of England.
  • Charlottetown was designated the capital city of the Province in 1765.
  • In 1768, Charles Morris from Nova Scotia began laying out the streets of Charlottetown.
  • Expanding on Charles Morris’ plan, Thomas Wright created a layout of the town with 500 lots.
  • Charlottetown became a City by act of the General Assembly of Prince Edward Island under the City of Charlottetown Act in April 1855.
  • Charlottetown was the headquarters of the military.
